Many thunderstorm safety rules and suggestions children learn early in life. Youth ignore the rules thinking they are invincible. Adults are too busy enjoying themselves to take adequate measures for safety. It is hard to believe that lightning claims more lives than hurricanes or tornadoes.
While it is true that occasionally there will be a news story about someone being hit by lightning
and living to tell about it, thunderstorm safety is no laughing matter. These are exceptions to the rule. It is best to respect nature.
Consult the weatherman’s forecast when planning a camping trip. Recognize that there are no guarantees and should the worst happen, practice safety precautions. Secure your supplies fast and get into a shelter, car or building. Avoid contact with others, tall objects and metal objects including sporting equipment. If you are on or in the water, head for dry ground. Tall objects attract lightning. Keep your hands off the ground and stay low to avoid ground currents.
