Toddler Tantrums

Your toddler is experiencing temper tantrums, moodiness, stubborn behavior and you are well aware that this means the start of “terrible twos."  Experts say that the key to figuring out your little one is to work with your child instead of battling them.

Keep in mind that your toddler is probably struggling with the ability to communicate effectively.  When your child cannot translate their feelings verbally, it is not uncommon for them to respond physically.  Remember to stay calm and be supportive.  The easiest way to do this is to create a consistent daily routine that provides them with the stability they need to strive.  Consistency allows you and your toddler to know what to expect in any situation, like before a meal or nap time.  Also, make sure to stand your ground and set limits. This will allow your toddler to understand that when he or she tests you, your reaction will remain the same.

Another helpful tip is to give your toddler specific limited choices.  For example, at snack time ask “would you like fruit or vegetables?”  General questions like, “what do you want for a snack?” may confuse or overwhelm your child causing tantrums and misbehavior.  Allowing your toddler to make choices for themselves empowers them to feel as though they are making decisions in their daily lives as well.

Another strategy is to begin discipline routines, such as time-out or the loss of a favorite toy.  Do not give in to tantrums and hold firm with your disciplinary actions.  Finally, try toddler proofing your home.  This can be a great way to avoid saying the word “no” as often.  Above all things, remember that finding the right way to communicate with your toddler is the first step in getting through the “terrible twos.”
